Roald Dahl's BFG movie

Singapore’s upcoming movies are fun for all the family

The weather is amazingly hot this summer, and like most families, you’re probably on the lookout for things to keep everyone entertained and cool. Luckily for you there’s a crop of fascinating new upcoming movies about to be released that are ideal for family outings. From the weird and wonderful through to the downright hilarious, there’s something on offer to suit every taste.

The BFG (Big Friendly Giant)

Based on the book by world-renowned children’s author, Roald Dahl, and brought to the screen by director Steven Spielberg, this delightful tale of a young orphan girl befriended by a giant who blows dreams at sleeping people hits cinemas on the 21st of July.

Roald Dahl's BFG movieIt entertains on every level and will fascinate both parents and children alike. With stunning animation by Weta Digital – the studio behind such visual masterpieces as Lord of The Rings and King Kong – this latest movie centres around Sophie and the giant’s plan to rid England of a band of extremely nasty child-eating giants with charming names like Gizzardguzzler and Fleshlumpeater.

Afterwards though, you may have to get used to your kids referring to you as whizzpopping whoopsey-splunkers!

Nine Lives

Yes, you guessed it; this new movie involves a cat.  But it’s one brought to you by the director of the Men in Black movies, so it’s not going to be just any old cat. It’s going to be a very weird and funny cat that happens to be inhabited by luckless billionaire, Tom Brand (played by Kevin Spacey).
An all-star cast that includes Jennifer Garner and Christopher Walken brings alive this tale of a workaholic dad who isn’t spending enough time with his family, especially his daughter, so a mysterious and mystical pet seller sets about putting him into a position where he has to. Which is from inside a cat called Mr. Fuzzypants!

This sensational all-round family movie hits cinemas from the 4th of August.

Alice Through the Looking Glass

This much anticipated follow-up to Tim Burton’s magical Alice In Wonderland has arrived on the 7th of July. A highly twisted take on the Lewis Carroll tale, and directed by James Boblin, it stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

Packed with the fantastical images and bizarre performances that are the trademark of all films that Burton has a hand in, it tells the story of Alice’s attempts to save the maniacal Mad Hatter in the crazed world of Wonderland.

Unlike anything Lewis Carroll imagined though, this retelling involves time machines and an appearance by Sacha Baron Cohen.

So as you can see, there’s a lot to keep the family entertained over the summer. And these three movies are just the tip of the iceberg, so keep an eye out for more movie hints in the near future.
